Is MicroTCA a solution for me?

You should seriously consider MicroTCA if your application

  • requires high computing and signal processing performance at moderate price levels,
  • needs extended on-board diagnostics features and remote management capabilities (like partial re-boot and frequent firmware updates)
  • will have to endure the hot-swap of components.

Is MicroTCA here to stay?

MicroTCA is the first and only standard where a serial differential bus system is fully implemented, resulting in outstanding system reliability and maintainability while offering superior analog signal processing and digital computing performance at the same time. The PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) unites many partners with a similar interest in such technical advances, and a strong consortium has formed to support further development. Many other firms have already made important contributions to component development as well, indicating that MicroTCA adoption has passed a critical threshold and a self-sustaining technological eco-system is within reach.

How much do I have to invest to start?

A typical 12-slot MicroTCA system including crate, power supply, CPU and controller (MCH) will currently cost between 8.000–10.000 EUR, but smaller (and cheaper) MicroTCA starter kits are also available.

What about operating systems?

GNU/Linux, Windows and other operating systems run on MicroTCA. Most systems are remotely controlled via network connections, but it is also possible to plug in monitor, mouse and keyboard directly into the CPU board, install the operating system locally and operate the MicroTCA system as a stand-alone unit.
